I was born the 6th of 7 girls. My image was that of being one of seven plus one brother. Throughout life, when people asked how many brothers and sisters do you have, “I would chant 6 sisters and 1 brothers.” Never a math lover, less than two years ago, I was forced return to subtraction when a sister suddenly died.
My narrative changed, my world view dimmed, creating art became a must do and not a need to. I had always feared and disliked math. Grief sent me me back to a childhood era when we would chant 7 takeaway 1 equals 6. Yes, grief will teach you math.
